Community Open House set for Saturday, January 13

The new Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Drexel Town Square Health Center will open its doors at the corner of West Drexel Avenue and South Sixth Street on January 18, bringing an unprecedented level of health care services to Oak Creek and surrounding communities.

Community residents are invited to preview the new health center at an open house on Saturday, January 13, from 9 am until noon. The event will include tours, refreshments and opportunities to meet and schedule appointments with doctors who will work there.

The 109,000-square-foot health center will offer a complete spectrum of services in one location, from primary care and urgent care to an outpatient surgery center and a cancer center. Thirty-nine physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants will practice at the center, including specialists representing a dozen different specialty care areas. In addition, occupational medicine and support services including laboratory, imaging and pharmacy will be available.

Drexel Town Square Health Center is the fourth new health center opened by the Froedtert & MCW health network in the past 12 months. The other three are in Brookfield, Mequon and Milwaukee. The Drexel Town Square site also adds to the health network’s growing presence south of Milwaukee, which was marked by an expanded affiliation last year with the former United Hospital System, now operating as Froedtert South.

Jacobson added, “People tell us they want high quality care that’s convenient and fits their lives. Many of our patients already come from Oak Creek, South Milwaukee, Caledonia, Racine and beyond, and this location gives them a comprehensive, close-to-home option with the resources of the Froedtert & MCW academic medical center at their fingertips.”

Jacobson said the Froedtert & MCW planning team studied the community’s needs before determining the appropriate services to offer. She said primary and specialty care as well as cancer care were identified as significant shortages in the area.

She noted that the design of the new health center responds to the trend toward digital health care, and will be able to offer options such as virtual consults and e-visits.

The health center is expected to create about 145 new full- and part-time jobs in its first year, with additional job growth projected in subsequent years.

The current lineup of services at the Froedtert & MCW Drexel Town Square Health Center includes the following, with additional services planned for the near future.

• Primary care: Family medicine with extended appointment hours

• Urgent care: Seven days a week, 7 am to 11 pm

• Specialty care: Audiology, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, ear/nose/throat, general surgery, hand surgery, nutrition and diabetes services, ophthalmology/optometry, orthopedics, pain management, plastic and reconstructive surgery, podiatry and urology. All were identified as underserved needs in the area.

• Outpatient surgery center: An option for procedures such as colonoscopy, arthroscopy, ear/nose/throat and some orthopedic surgeries. It is equipped with advanced video and image-capture technologies and designed to be adaptable as surgical techniques evolve.

• Cancer center: Has surgery, medical oncology and radiation oncology capabilities. Onsite state-of-the-art radiation oncology machines will save travel for patients who require daily treatments. Surgical consults and follow-up visits for patients with breast, colorectal, prostate and urologic cancers, and infusion services for chemotherapy, blood products and IV also will be offered. As part of the Froedtert & MCW Cancer Network, the cancer center also will treat other cancers and benign blood disorders, providing streamlined access to the Froedtert & MCW academic medical center in Wauwatosa if needed.

• Support services: Mammography, CT, ultrasound, fluoroscopy and general imaging; cardiac diagnostics, rehabilitation services, general infusion services, retail pharmacy

• Occupational medicine: Comprehensive employer services including acute and follow-up workers compensation injury treatment, employment-related exams and testing through Froedtert & MCW Workforce Health.

Froedtert Health leases the building from HSA PrimeCare, the developer. The architect was Eppstein Uhen Architects and CG Schmidt was the general contractor.
